Backcountry Basics - Asahidake

Overview

Backcountry Basics is a small-group, field-based introduction to responsible winter backcountry travel around Asahidake Ropeway.

The session is designed to help participants build practical skills, confidence, and good habits before progressing deeper into backcountry environments with appropriate training and experience, or enrolling in a formal avalanche certification course.

This is a non-certifying educational program focused on real-world application, conservative decision-making, and safe group travel in volcanic alpine terrain specific to central Hokkaido.

Important Information

    • Location: Asahidake Ropeway area (meet at the ropeway)

    • Duration: Approximately 4–5 hours (half-day), within ropeway operating hours

    • Group Size: 1–4 participants

    • Group Model: Small-group learning. Solo participants may be combined with other suitable guests on the same date.

    • Foundations of responsible backcountry travel

    • Conservative decision-making frameworks and risk awareness

    • Terrain recognition and route choice near lift-access terrain

    • Group management, spacing, and communication

    • Practical use of avalanche safety equipment (beacon, shovel, probe)

    • How to prepare for, and get the most out of, a formal AST course

  • This program is non-certifying and does not substitute for formal avalanche training or independent backcountry travel preparation.

  • Included: Avalanche safety backpack (airbag not included unless specified), digital beacon, probe, shovel. Participants supply skis/splitboard, boots, helmet, and appropriate winter clothing.

  • Exclusive sessions may be requested in advance and are subject to availability and adjusted rates.

  • Conditions and ropeway operations may affect terrain access.

    No certificates issued.
